Pipe Relining vs Pipe Replacement

Relining isn't automatically better than digging, and digging isn't automatically more thorough. The right method depends on what the camera shows, what sits above the pipe and how much of the line is affected.

When relining tends to make sense

  • The host pipe is cracked or has open joints but still holds its shape.
  • The line runs under a driveway, slab, pool surround, paving or established garden.
  • Root intrusion is the main issue and entry points can be sealed.
  • The defect is reachable from an existing access point.
  • You want the property back to normal quickly.

When replacement is often the better call

  • A section has collapsed or been crushed and there's nothing sound to line against.
  • The pipe has a significant sag holding water — lining preserves the bad fall.
  • The line is undersized or badly laid and the geometry itself needs correcting.
  • The pipe is shallow, under open lawn, and digging is genuinely cheap.
  • The whole run has deteriorated to the point where new pipe is more economical.

Hybrid approaches are common

Plenty of jobs end up as both: a short excavation to replace one failed section, then lining the rest of the run from the same access. If a specialist offers only one method for every situation, that's worth noting.

Comparing the real cost

Compare like for like. A replacement quote should include excavation, spoil removal, new pipe, backfill, compaction and reinstatement of whatever was on top — concrete, pavers, turf, irrigation. A relining quote should include cleaning, the lined length, junction reinstatement and post-install CCTV. Indicative figures for both sit on the pipe relining cost guide.

Get the diagnosis first

This decision can't be made from symptoms. Start with what your recurring blockage indicates, then read how pipe relining works and, for waste lines, sewer pipe relining.
