Broken drain repair
Drain Relining – Fixing Damaged Drains Without Excavation
A drain that keeps blocking, drains slowly no matter what you do, or smells after rain is usually telling you something about the pipe itself. Drain relining repairs the damaged section internally, so the surface above it stays intact.
What a damaged drain actually looks like
Homeowners tend to see symptoms at the fixture — a slow shower, a gurgling laundry tub, a gully that overflows. Inside the pipe, the cause is typically far less dramatic and far more persistent: a hairline crack that has widened, a joint that has stepped 5 mm out of line, a section of pipe wall that has broken away and now sits in the flow path, or fine roots forming a net that catches everything passing.
Why CCTV inspection comes first
Clearing a drain removes the blockage. It doesn't tell you why the blockage formed there. A camera run does three things a jetting visit can't: it shows the defect, it measures how far along the line it sits, and it records the length that needs treatment. Without those numbers, no one can price a relining job honestly — they can only estimate.
If your drain has been cleared repeatedly, read why drains keep blocking before booking another clear.
What no-dig drain repair involves
- Camera inspection to locate and measure the defect.
- High-pressure cleaning and root cutting to prepare the host pipe.
- A resin liner installed through an existing access point and cured in place.
- Junction reinstatement where a branch has been covered.
- A final camera run recording the completed repair.
The full sequence, including curing methods and limitations, is set out on our pipe relining page.
Sectional repair or a full length?
Not every damaged drain needs the whole run lined. Where a single joint or a short cracked section is the only defect, a sectional patch may be enough — usually the cheaper option. Where the camera shows deterioration along most of the line, patching one metre of a failing ten just moves the next blockage along. The footage should make that decision fairly obvious.
Stormwater drains
Stormwater lines suffer root intrusion and crushing too, especially shallow runs under driveways and paths.
Sewer drains
Waste lines are covered in detail on the sewer pipe relining page, including joint failure in older clay pipe.
Cost orientation
Short sectional repairs commonly start around A$2,000–4,000; longer runs are priced per metre.
Replacement
Collapsed or badly sagged drains may still need digging — see relining vs replacement.
